Cottage Bakery Label Example: Six Samples, Filled In

By Home Bakery Spreadsheets · Published

A paper-wrapped bread loaf and a small kraft cookie pouch on a floured baking tray, each with a blank white rectangular label.

A filled-in label is easier to copy than a rule. A cottage bakery label example shows every line completed, so you can see where the product name, ingredients, allergens and your state's statement sit.

All names, addresses and numbers below are made up. The sentences in quotation marks are copied from the state pages, which were last checked in October 2026. The labels show layout, so take the wording from your own state.

Here is the pattern all six follow. None of the three state pages sets a position for the statement. Michigan's own sample label puts it at the top, above the product name. Put yours where it is easy to read.

Lemon Shortbread Willow Lane Bakes 12 Sample Street, Springfield, MI 49000 Ingredients: Enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), butter (milk, salt), sugar, lemon zest, salt. Contains: wheat, milk Net Wt. 6 oz (170 g) MADE IN A HOME KITCHEN THAT HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE & RURAL DEVELOPMENT

1. Boxed cake in Florida: name, ingredients, weight and statement

A shelf-stable vanilla cake in a box carries all of these lines under Florida's statute. They cover the name and address of the operation and the name of the product. They also include the ingredients in descending order of weight, the net weight, allergen information and the statement. Here is how one could read.

Vanilla Birthday Cake. Honey Pot Bakes, 40 Sample Road, Orlando, FL 32800. Ingredients: sugar, enriched wheat flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), butter (milk, salt), eggs, whole milk, baking powder, vanilla extract, salt. Contains: wheat, milk, eggs. Net Wt. 18 oz (510 g). "Made in a cottage food operation that is not subject to Florida's food safety regulations."

Florida's statute sets 10-point type as the minimum for the statement. The color must contrast with the background. It also says a nutritional claim, if you make one, needs nutrition information. This label makes none.

The cookie bag in the picture follows Michigan's list. The list covers name and physical address, product name and ingredients in descending order by weight with sub-ingredients. It adds net weight with the metric equivalent, allergens and the statement. The statement must be at least the equivalent of 11-point font, about 1/8 inch tall.

Six ounces converts to 170 grams (1 ounce is 28.35 grams, so 6 ounces is 170.1). Michigan also accepts all capital letters or upper and lower case for the statement.

3. Bread loaf in Texas: a registration number can replace the address

A Texas loaf label needs the name of the operation, an address or a unique registration number from the state, and the common name of the product. Allergens and the disclosure are needed too. Sourdough Bread, Hill Country Loaves, registration number [your state number]. Contains: wheat. "THIS PRODUCT WAS PRODUCED IN A PRIVATE RESIDENCE THAT IS NOT SUBJECT TO GOVERNMENTAL LICENSING OR INSPECTION."

The Texas page lists major allergens. It does not list full ingredients or a net weight line. It says an operation that registers can print the state's number in place of a home address. Confirm with the state before you leave anything off.

4. Refrigerated cake in Texas: add the date made and the handling line

A cake that needs the fridge counts as a time and temperature control food in Texas. The label then adds the date the food was made and a handling sentence in at least 12-point type, worded like this. "SAFE HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS: To prevent illness from bacteria, keep this food refrigerated or frozen until the food is prepared for consumption."

Operations that sell these foods in Texas must register with the state. A cream cheese cake would carry this label in Texas. In Michigan, a cake whose frosting needs refrigeration is not allowed.

5. Cupcake box with nuts in Michigan: name the nut

Michigan wants the exact tree nut named. A box of walnut cupcakes lists "walnuts" in the ingredients and in the Contains line, never "nuts". A full Contains line might read Contains: wheat, eggs, milk, soy, walnuts.

The FDA lists nine major allergens. They are milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and sesame. It says to show them in the ingredient list or in a Contains statement. If you use a Contains line, it must include every allergen in the product.

6. Invoice for a tiered cake: when a sticker will not stick

A wedding cake has no flat spot for a label. Michigan's page covers wedding cakes, birthday cakes and other specialty cakes that are not easily packaged. For these, you must put all labeling requirements on the invoice and deliver the invoice with the cake. Smaller cakes must be boxed, and the label goes on the box.

So the invoice carries the same lines as a label. These are your name and address, the cake name, ingredients, allergens, net weight and the statement.

How to choose a cottage bakery label example for your product

Match the example to what you sell and where.

A filled-in label teaches faster than a rule written about one.

You can set these lines up in the Cottage Food Label workbook, which fills the Label tab from a Details tab. It is the wrong choice for a Texas refrigerated cake if you need a made-on date. It has a best before date field but no date made field. Check that the layout holds every line your state asks for before you rely on it. The workbook's How to use tab names no app menu, only the Details and Label tabs. So the steps read the same in Excel and in Google Sheets.

You can also lay out any of these six labels in a word processor for nothing. The state pages are free, and a text box is enough. The workbook costs $5.99 and pays off when you reprint often and want your details in one file.

Lines bakers leave off a label

The state pages point to the lines that are easiest to miss.

  • Metric weight in Michigan, such as 170 g next to 6 oz.
  • Michigan wants a physical address, because a post office box does not count.
  • Michigan also wants sub-ingredients, such as the flour or butter inside a mix.
  • Date made in Texas, on a cake that needs the fridge.
  • Net weight in Florida, where the statute lists it.
  • A complete Contains line, because a partial one is wrong.

Check each against your own state's page before you print.

Do baked goods qualify as cottage foods

For the three states here, yes. Michigan lists cakes, cookies and breads, and Florida's agriculture department lists loaf breads, rolls, cakes, pastries and cookies. Texas allows any food except meat, seafood, ice products, low-acid canned goods, cannabis products and raw milk. Rules change, so confirm your product with the state.

Frequently asked questions

Do baked goods fall under cottage food law?

In Michigan, Texas and Florida, yes for common baked goods. Michigan lists cakes, cookies and breads, Florida lists loaf breads, cakes, pastries and cookies, and Texas allows any food except a short list of exclusions. Details differ by state, so confirm with yours.

Can you provide some examples of food labeling?

Yes. The six labels below show a cake box, a cookie bag, a bread loaf, a refrigerated cake, a nut cupcake box and an invoice for a cake that cannot carry a sticker.

Conclusion

Six labels, one pattern. Each carries a product name, the maker, the ingredients or allergens, and the state's own sentence, and each state moves one or two details. Copy the layout, not the wording, and take the wording from your own state's page. Then confirm the result with your state before you print a batch.
